The Launceston City Park Monkeys are one of the city’s most unique and much-loved attractions, located within the beautiful City Park in the heart of Launceston. Visitors can view a troop of Japanese macaques (often called “snow monkeys”) in a purpose-built enclosure known as Monkey Island.
The monkeys have a long and fascinating history in the park. In 1965, Launceston formed a sister-city relationship with Ikeda in Japan, and the macaques were later gifted as a symbol of friendship, becoming a popular attraction for both locals and visitors.
Set among landscaped gardens, the enclosure allows visitors to observe the monkeys up close as they interact, play and relax in their environment. The attraction is free to visit and is especially popular with families.
Today, the monkeys remain an iconic part of Launceston’s identity, offering a rare opportunity to see these animals in a city park setting.
