The Gorge Scenic Chairlift is a really special way to see Cataract Gorge from above. It gives you a chance to float over a natural area that’s over 140 million years old. Because the ride moves slowly, you can really take in the views, snap some photos, and feel like you’re far away from everything.
The chairlift stretches 457 metres in total, including the world’s longest single span at 308 metres. It runs between Basin Road in West Launceston, near the main carpark, and a station in the middle of the Cliff Grounds reserve. Along the way, you’ll pass over a huge natural basin filled by the South Esk River, which sometimes rushes dramatically through the gorge.
From up high, you can see the impressive dolerite cliffs, the river below, and both sides of the gorge. It’s easy to see why visitors have called Cataract Gorge one of the most beautiful spots in the world.
Each chair has two seats and moves slowly, making it safe and relaxing. It’s a family-friendly ride that everyone can enjoy, including people in wheelchairs. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful escape, some amazing photos, or just a fun way to see the gorge, the chairlift is a unique experience that’s perfect for visitors of all ages.
📌 Tip for visitors: Opening hours and ticket prices can change — please check the official site or contact the chairlift directly before visiting.
